The Serenity of Pondicherry

Beautiful golden sand, serenity, old French structures – Pondicherry is beauty personified.

About Pondicherry

Pondicherry was the largest French colony in India. Renamed as Puducherry (meaning ‘new village’) in September 2006, it comprises four beautiful coastal regions - Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam. Among its diverse attractions are a coastline of 32 kms, palm-fringed beaches, backwaters, fishing villages, beach resorts, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, the international city of Auroville, the French boulevard town with its French heritage.

Thins To Do

Sri Aurobindo Ashram – under no circumstances should you miss out the ashram. General visits to the main ashram building on Marine St comprise of a tour of the flower-festooned samadhi of Aurobindo and the Mother, and the bookshop.

French Quarter – Visit this part of the city for its cobbled streets, white and mustard buildings, and a sense of the Gallic glory.

Seafront – Being a sea-side town, Beach Road is the place to be at! Take a walk at dawn or dusk.

Puducherry Museum – A small and cute museum, this is a great place to know more about the history of this beautiful place.

Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple - Don’t miss the chance to get a head pat from the temple elephant at this temple dedicated to Ganesh. With over 40 skilfully painted friezes, the temple is beautiful.
